Resin Bound Driveways

Smooth, seamless and fully permeable surfaces in a stunning range of natural aggregate colours. SuDS compliant with no planning permission typically required.

What Is a Resin Bound Driveway?

A resin bound driveway is a modern, premium surfacing solution that combines UV-stable polyurethane resin with carefully selected natural aggregates. The resin and aggregate are thoroughly mixed together before being hand-trowelled onto a prepared base to create a smooth, seamless and fully permeable surface. The result is a beautiful, contemporary finish that allows rainwater to drain naturally through the surface and into the ground below.

Resin bound surfacing has become increasingly popular across the UK in recent years, and for good reason. It offers a clean, modern aesthetic that works beautifully on driveways, pathways, patios and forecourts. The surface is completely flat and smooth, making it ideal for wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters. Unlike loose gravel, the aggregate is permanently bonded within the resin matrix, so there are no loose stones to migrate onto paths, lawns or into the road.

Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded: Understanding the Difference

It is important to understand the distinction between resin bound and resin bonded surfaces, as they are fundamentally different products despite their similar names. The difference in installation method has a significant impact on the performance, appearance and longevity of the finished surface.

Key Differences at a Glance

Resin Bound (What We Install)

The resin and aggregate are mixed together in a forced-action mixer before being trowelled onto the base. Every stone is fully coated and bonded to its neighbours, creating a strong, porous matrix. Water passes through the surface naturally. The finish is smooth, even and does not shed stones. This is the premium option and the only method we use.

Resin Bonded (Not Recommended)

Resin is applied to the existing surface like paint, and then loose aggregate is scattered on top. Only the bottom of each stone is bonded. The surface is rough, not permeable, and prone to shedding loose stones as the resin wears. It looks similar initially but deteriorates much faster and does not meet SuDS requirements for permeability.

We exclusively install resin bound surfaces because we believe in providing a product that will perform and look outstanding for years to come. We will never offer resin bonded as an alternative, as it simply does not deliver the same quality or longevity.

Benefits of Resin Bound Driveways

Natural Aggregate Options

One of the most appealing aspects of resin bound surfacing is the extraordinary range of natural aggregate colours and blends available. Each blend uses kiln-dried natural stone that is graded to a consistent size for a uniform, professional finish. Popular choices among our customers include the following options.

Golden Gravel

A warm, inviting blend that works beautifully with red brick, sandstone and period properties. Golden gravel creates a welcoming entrance that glows in natural sunlight and provides a timeless, classic appearance.

Silver Grey

A cool, contemporary blend that pairs perfectly with modern architecture, rendered walls and grey window frames. Silver grey is one of our most popular choices for new-build properties and those seeking a sleek, minimalist aesthetic.

Autumn Blend

A rich, multi-toned mix of warm browns, ambers and subtle reds that creates a natural, organic look. This blend complements traditional and rural properties particularly well and adds character to any entrance.

Brittany Bronze

A sophisticated mix of bronze, copper and gold tones that adds a touch of luxury to any driveway. Brittany bronze is an excellent choice for properties with warm-toned brickwork or natural stone features.

Umber Brown

A deep, earthy brown that provides a rich, grounded appearance. Umber brown works well with both traditional and contemporary properties and is particularly effective when combined with green landscaping and mature planting.

The Installation Process

Resin bound surfacing requires a solid, stable base to perform at its best. In most cases, an existing concrete or tarmac surface in good structural condition provides an ideal foundation. If the existing surface has significant cracking, settlement or drainage issues, we will advise on the most appropriate remedial work before proceeding.

Base Preparation

The existing surface is thoroughly cleaned, repaired if necessary, and primed with a specialist bonding agent. The primer creates a strong chemical bond between the existing base and the new resin bound layer. If no suitable existing surface is present, we can install a new concrete or tarmac base as part of the project.

Mixing and Laying

The kiln-dried aggregate and UV-stable resin are combined in a forced-action mixer until every stone is thoroughly coated. The mixture is then hand-trowelled onto the primed base to a depth of approximately 15 to 18mm. Our installers work methodically across the surface, ensuring a consistent depth and smooth finish throughout. The material is self-levelling to a degree, but the skill of the installer is crucial in achieving a flawless result.

Curing

The surface is left to cure for approximately four to six hours before light foot traffic, and typically 24 hours before vehicle use, depending on weather conditions. Once fully cured, the surface is ready for normal daily use with no further treatment required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Resin Bound Driveway FAQs

What is the difference between resin bound and resin bonded driveways?
Resin bound surfaces are created by mixing the resin and aggregate together before trowelling the mixture onto the prepared base. This produces a smooth, porous surface that allows water to drain through. Resin bonded surfaces are made by applying resin to the base and then scattering loose aggregate on top. Resin bonded is not permeable and tends to shed loose stones over time. We only install resin bound.
Do I need planning permission for a resin bound driveway?
In most cases, no. Because resin bound surfaces are fully permeable and allow water to drain naturally into the ground, they meet SuDS requirements. Under permitted development rules, permeable surfaces on domestic driveways typically do not require planning permission. We always recommend checking with your local authority if you are unsure.
How long does a resin bound driveway last?
A professionally installed resin bound driveway using high-quality UV-stable resin will last 15 to 25 years or more. The surface is resistant to UV fading, frost damage and cracking. Occasional cleaning with a pressure washer will keep it looking its best.
Can resin bound be laid over my existing driveway?
Yes, in many cases resin bound can be laid directly over an existing concrete or tarmac base, provided the existing surface is in sound condition with no major cracking or structural damage. This makes it a cost-effective option as it avoids the need for full excavation. We assess the existing base during our free site visit.
